Client Overview

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), based in Washington, DC, has retained Sterling Martin Associates to conduct a search for their next Vice President of Resource Development. Through various functions, the Resource Development Office provides NCLR with high-level effectiveness and ethical standards to reach and exceed agreed upon annual income and donor cultivation goals. Reporting to the President and CEO, Janet Murguia, the Vice President is responsible for managing a staff of five.

NCLR has an annual budget of approximately $32 million and a staff of 120. The organization is the largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States with a mission to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations (CBOs), NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas - assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families.

Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization. NCLR serves all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country and has operations in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

NCLR's governing Board of Directors represents the constituency it serves and includes 26 elected members. Bylaws require that the Board include representatives of various geographic regions and nationality groups, that half the Board represent Affiliates or have identifiable constituencies, and that the Board include equal representation of men and women.

NCLR is looking for a creative, entrepreneurial professional with significant capital campaign and individual gifts experience to lead its resource development efforts. For more information please visit the NCLR's Web site.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead resource development team that includes: Major Gifts Officer, Campaign and Donor Relations Manager, Development and Community Manager, Corporate Relations Officer, Development Associate
  • Provide fundraising coordination and management among the Board of Directors and its resource development committee
  • Work in tandem with the President and executive team to coordinate and maximize current overall fundraising efforts
  • Build development infrastructure to maximize effectiveness of NCLR's database capacity, use of technology for fundraising, acknowledgement processes, and on-going systems for donor cultivation and stewardship
  • Develop the necessary systems, processes, and tools to better communicate the role of Resource Development across the different departments at NCLR
  • Represent NCLR as an officer of the organization and serve as an external national presence in the field of Latino civil rights
Requisite Candidate Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree from an accredited college or university
  • Dedication and passion for the mission of NCLR
  • At least ten years of significant management experience in the fundraising sector and proven track record
  • Strong demonstrated fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and donors
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and excellence in organizational and project management with the ability to manage a budget
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Integrity, positive attitude, sense of humor, mission-driven, self-directed
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus
