The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) recently appointed Emma Read, DVM, of The Ohio State University (OSU) as its next Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Read will assume the role on February 1, 2026, succeeding Andrew T. Maccabe, DVM, MPH, JD, who led the organization for 12 years.
Read is an internationally renowned veterinary educator with a long-standing record of service to AAVMC and the broader veterinary profession. In addition to her visionary leadership and operational expertise, she brings an unwavering commitment to educational innovation to this role.
Dr. Read currently serves as Associate Dean for Professional Programs at OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where she also holds the Ruth Stanton Chair in Veterinary Medicine. Before joining OSU, Read held several key positions at the University of Calgary, including founding faculty of the university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chair of the Clinical Skills Program, and Associate Dean, Academic.
A graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Dr. Read completed a residency in large-animal surgery at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
In her new role, Dr. Read will guide AAVMC into its next phase of strategic growth, including focusing on what the association can bring as added value for member institutions.
