The Opportunity

Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. (FBLA) is seeking an experienced and personable interim President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to provide strong leadership during a transitional period. The Interim President & CEO will work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the continued success of the organization, maintain strategic initiatives, and continue the organization’s legacy of helping students prepare for careers in business by focusing on academic competitions and leadership development.

The ideal Interim President & CEO candidate will reside within a commutable distance to the organization’s Reston, VA office and will be able to lead the in-office staff of 15. The Interim President & CEO would ideally begin in the role no later than early June 2024.

About FBLA

FBLA is a Reston, Virginia-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) education association with more than 230,000 middle school, high school, and college members worldwide. FBLA inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences. FBLA is the largest business Career and Technical Student Organization in the world.

The Interim President & CEO Role

The Interim President and CEO reports to a Board of 17 members and oversees operations, ensures a compelling value proposition, fosters member engagement and growth, and executes the strategic direction as approved by the Board.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide regular updates to the Board Chair and Executive Committee on organizational performance and key initiatives.
  • Provide strategic leadership in collaboration with the Board to ensure the continued growth and success of FBLA.
  • Develop and implement short-term strategies to address immediate organizational needs.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations, staff management and accountability to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in achieving organizational goals.
  • Work closely with the Treasurer and Director of Finance and Operations to monitor and manage the organization’s financial results and overall financial condition.

Primary Responsibilities of the Interim President & CEO

  • Provide inspirational and mission-driven leadership that reflects the core values and purpose of FBLA.
  • Effectively and efficiently manage the organization by achieving priority goals, ensuring membership satisfaction and growth, generating revenue, and delivering quality programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure the organization is financially sound and meets short- and long-term financial obligations and commitments.
  • Work with the national board, officers, staff and volunteers, as well as members and chapters to build a culture that fosters collaboration within and across the divisions and national FBLA community.
  • Engage with student, alumni, and professional networks; develop and maintain relationships with key influencers and organizations who can aid FBLA in expanding its mission and presence throughout the country.
  • Act as a principal spokesperson in all venues, including with the media, government officials, educators, and business leaders.

Required Skills, Experience, and Desired Qualifications

  • Experience as a CEO or in a senior executive leadership role, preferably from the following areas: nonprofit operations leadership, for profit enterprises, or higher education.
  • Demonstrated business acumen to assess the business landscape, identify resource requirements, and market products to meet the needs of diverse constituencies.
  • Exceptional communication skills with an ability to inspire and engage others to achieve desired objectives, as well as to promote the organization’s presence.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in short/long-term budgetary planning that supports strategic and operational plans.
  • Experience working with Boards to develop strong governance and accountability mechanisms; an ability to leverage board members’ experiences, wisdom, and perspectives to achieve organizational success.
  • Excellent coalition-building skills to work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • An effective network builder; able to engage senior business executives, industry stakeholders, government officials, educators, and other nonprofit leaders to engage in partnerships, programming and governance; able to work across sectors and industries.
  • An understanding of career technical education, youth development, and economic empowerment is a plus, as is an ability to connect with youth and engage with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
