United States Society on Dams Appoints Sharon Powers Executive Director

Following a national search conducted by the Sterling Martin Associates team, the United States Society on Dams (USSD) selected Sharon Powers to fill USSD’s Executive Director role. USSD was looking for someone who had executive leadership and management experience with diverse and decentralized global non-profit association or other relevant executive leadership and management experience. She assumed her new role on October 30, 2017.
Most recently, Ms. Powers served as director of administration for the American Water Works Association (AAWA) in Denver where she also launched AAWA’s philanthropic initiatives. Before that, she was president and CEO of the North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Powers has extensive experience in strategic planning, communications, operations, government relations, public relations and marketing.
While at AWWA, Powers and her staff were responsible for customer service, conference registrations, facility management, purchasing and contracts. She was selected to create a business plan for a new philanthropic initiative for the Association, and directed the development effort for the scholarship program, student and young professional programs, and Community Engineering Corps, while also retaining her administrative responsibilities. While with the North Las Vegas Chamber, Powers led a five-person staff; during her 10-year tenure, membership increased by 107% and program profitability by 64%.
Powers has extensive experience in strategic planning, communications, operations, government relations, public relations, and marketing. She thrives in an environment of collaboration and joint efforts to reach mutual goals.
Established in 1930, USSD is dedicated to the science of planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining dams, levees and associated civil works. Its members focus on advancing awareness and understanding of dam and levee systems by building communities of practice through a common mission to advocate, educate, collaborate and cultivate.
