The Thoracic Surgery Foundation (TSF) announced the appointment of Karen Matts as its new Executive Director, effective January 27, 2026. TSF is the charitable arm of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) dedicated to advancing cardiothoracic surgery by supporting research, education, innovation, and global humanitarian outreach.
As Executive Director, Ms. Matts will provide strategic and operational leadership for TSF, with responsibility for governance, fundraising, award programs, marketing, and stakeholder engagement. She will work closely with TSF surgeon leadership and the TSF Board to strengthen the Foundation’s programs and expand its philanthropic impact.
Prior to joining TSF, Ms. Matts spent more than ten years with the MDRT Foundation, where she most recently served as Manager of Strategic Partnerships, overseeing global grants programs and working with charitable organizations worldwide. Her background includes experience in philanthropy, grantmaking, and nonprofit leadership.
