Our Process
STAGE 1: Understanding the Organization and Position
Develop an in-depth understanding of the organization and position through interviews with the search committee (or hiring team).
Discuss the implications of these findings within the position and on the search process with the search committee (or hiring team).
Develop a Summary of Organizational Interviews (SOI).
Develop a detailed position description.
Build a set of key criteria for the ideal candidate and the philosophy of the organization.
STAGE 2: Candidate Identification and Outreach
SM employs a comprehensive sourcing strategy that reaches both active and passive candidates, including:
- Targeted research and proactive Outreach
- David Martin’s personal network and referral connections
- Innovative tools (including AI) and advertising
STAGE 3: SM Candidate Assessment and Evaluation
The interview phase is a pivotal step where SM’s expertise in evaluating candidates truly shines. It includes:
- Preliminary phone interview
- In-depth behavioral interview
- Final interview with David Martin
- Utilizing the Everything DiSC® system to conduct a behavioral assessment of finalist candidates
Following preliminary interviews with SM, selected candidates are presented to the client for feedback.
STAGE 4: Selecting the Finalist
SM remains closely engaged throughout the rest of the interview process, facilitating a smooth, efficient, and high-touch experience. We recommend the clients hold a two-stage interview approach, with six to seven candidates in the first round and three finalists in the second. SM support includes:
- Recommended interview procedures
- Full logistical assistance with scheduling
- Interviewing guidance and tailored questions
- A candidate evaluation system for consistent feedback
- Rigorous reference and background checks
STAGE 5: Onboarding the New Executive and Setting the Stage for Success
To support a seamless transition, SM offers:
- 12 customized executive coaching sessions during the first year of the new executive’s tenure—one per month
- Regular check-ins with the organization
