Sterling Martin to Find Next BPS Executive Officer

Sterling Martin Associates has been retained by the Biophysical Society (BPS) to search for its next Executive Officer. The position is based in Rockville, MD. BPS’ budget is in the $5M range, and 17 professional staff members serve the organization. BPS is governed by its officers (4 members) and Council (13 members).

BPS was founded in 1958 to lead the development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. It does so through many programs, including meetings, publications, and committee outreach activities. The Society’s members, now over 9,000, work in academia, industry, and in government agencies throughout the world. BPS convenes and connects a global community of scientists working at the interface of the physical and life sciences and creates, shares, and advocates for biophysical knowledge and methods through programs and communities that support biophysicists.

The organization is governed by its officers (4) and Council (13), and 17 professional staff members serve the organization.

The Executive Officer (EO) of the Biophysical Society is the chief executive staff officer, responsible for ensuring that the BPS serves the needs and interests of its membership in accordance with the Society’s stated purpose to lead development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. The EO implements the strategic goals and objectives of the organization, and, with the President, enables the Council to fulfill its governance function. The EO gives direction and leadership toward the achievement of the Society’s philosophy, mission, strategy, goals, and objectives. Under the broad direction of the Council, the Executive Officer supports operations and administration of the Council, oversees design, marketing promotion, delivery, and quality of BPS’s programs, products, and services. S/he is responsible for overseeing the Society’s financial, tax, risk, and facilities management, manages the human resources for the organization, and assures that the Society and its mission, programs, products, and services are consistently presented in strong, positive image to relevant groups.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled executive who has experience in a leadership role for an organization of BPS’s size and scope.
