The NBCRNA Names New CEO: John Preston, DNSc, CRNA, FNAP, APRN

Washington D.C. (April 11, 2021) – The National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) hired John Preston, DNSc, CRNA, FNAP, APRN,

as their new Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Preston brings more than 30 years of experience as a Registered Nurse and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and graduate educator. He has received numerous awards and is an active member and volunteer for the ABSNC as well as other community and professional organizations.  NBCRNA CEO John Preston

Dr. Preston takes on his new CEO position from his most recent leadership position as the Chief Credentialing Officer for the NBCRNA. Before joining NBCRNA, Dr. Preston was the Associate Program Director and Professor at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science College of Health Professions, where he was responsible for student instruction and programmatic administration for the Nurse Anesthetist program. Before joining the university, Dr. Preston served as the Senior Director – Education and Professional Development for the  American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

Dr Preston received his Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 1985. After receiving his degree, Dr. Preston worked for six years as a Staff Nurse in critical care until 1992. Between 1992 and 1994, Dr. Preston attended school full time and received his Master’s degree in Nursing and Certificate in Anesthesia from the University of Tennessee – Memphis in 1994. He received his Doctor of Nursing Science in 2001 from the University of Tennessee – Health Science Center.

The NBCRNA regulates certification of nurse anesthetists and works in conjunction with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (which establishes practice standards) and the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (which establishes standards for educational programs). Individuals who earn at least a Master’s Degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program must then undergo a rigorous entry process and pass the NBCRNA’s National Certification Examination before earning their certification.
